Nervous Patients

Nervous or worried about dental treatment?

Being afraid, or being scared of the dentist, is an age old recognised and legitimate fear, sometimes called a phobia.

Being nervous or scared about going to the dentist affects people in different ways. Some are anxious about specific aspects of dental treatment. Others dislike being in such close contact with someone that they don’t know very well.

Some people have had unpleasant experiences as children, and are frightened that these will be repeated.

Our Dentists are aware that some patients are anxious, and are trained to take your fears seriously and deal with them sensitively.

Most of our patients receive treatment without having to resort to sedation. We understand some apprehension and pride ourselves on listening carefully to our patient’s needs and progressing with treatment at a pace that is comfortable. There are some circumstances when it is appropriate to offer sedation as a further means of enabling patients to feel fully relaxed and confident to progress with their treatment, particularly for those individuals who are very nervous of having dental treatment.

Many of our dentists are able to offer sedation for patients who are particularly nervous of dental treatment. Sedation can take the form of a tablet taken shortly before treatment that ease feelings of tension or anxiety.

Intravenous sedation is also available in selected practices, administered by dentists who are fully qualified to carry out this procedure. It involves a drug being administered intravenously directly into the blood supply. It is a painless procedure that leaves patients feeling relaxed and sleepy and able to tolerate lengthy periods of treatment without having to feel anxious or stressed.

Sedation is available for any kind of treatment you may require.
